Understanding Regions

Understanding Regions
Due: Monday, October 18 11:59pm via Canvas
Overview: Canada is divided into several large areas called regions. A region can be identified based on cultural
or physical aspects, or a combination of both. These regions often include more than one province. They are
commonly used to describe the geographic area and people living within, yet they are not legal entities (i.e. not
Provinces, not States) and have no jurisdiction over the land they encompass. Also, regions often experience
great variability within, for example in terms of culture, language, and more. Yet it remains a common approach,
both for geographers and for the general public, for identifying areas which have historically demonstrated
some cohesion.
In this assignment
? You will use academic and official government sources of information to describe one region of Canada.
? You will identify differences and similarities within the region.
? You will use Statistics Canada or provincial statistical data to prepare a demographic profile (population
composition) of the region.
? You will reflect on the region concept and the process of regionalization in human geography – why do
we do it, is it useful, what else could we do when examining large areas. See page 14 of text.
Canada there six commonly accepted regions, as seen in Figure 4.5 on page 134, “Regions of Canada.”
The titles of these regions in the textbook
reflects their physiographic regional names
more so than their common cultural regional
names so be sure to include alternate names in
your search efforts.
1. Cordillera of BC – aka British Columbia
2. Interior Plains – aka Western
Canada/the Prairies
3. Canadian Shield – aka Ontario, Quebec
(note: the map in the text does not
align with the physiogeographical
feature)
4. The North – aka the Territorial North
5. Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Lowlands –
aka Quebec
6. Atlantic and Gulf Region aka Atlantic
Canada, Maritimes
Value: 10% of term mark.
Length: The length for this assignment will vary a bit depending on your personal writing style, the number of
references you use, and possibly the size and variability of your region. The expected length is approximately
500 to 750 words.
Relevant Chapters: This assignment draws from Chapter 1 (What is Human Geography?) Chapter 2 (Population
and Health Geography), Chapter 4 (Geographies of Culture and Landscapes), and Chapter 5 (Geographies of
Identify and Difference). This assignment aligns with portions of a number of lessons, especially Lesson 4.1

(Population Composition), Lesson 5.1 (Cultural Regions; Vernacular Regions), and Lesson 6.1 (Making Cultural
Landscapes).
Skills Mastery: Your successful completion of this assignment will demonstrate your comprehension and
application of the region concept, as well as your ability to incorporate and properly cite academic and
government sources into your report.
Steps:
1. Select one Region of Canada identified on Figure 4.5, page 134. Be sure to identify this in your report.
2. Write a 500-750 word report:
o Using a variety of sources (academic and non-academic government or official tourism bureau; at least
three different sources), briefly describe your chosen and region. UBC Okanagan Library Research Help
o Using those sources, identify some similar

ities and differences within your region. These should be
primarily cultural but may also include physical geography as well, particularly where this affects the
culture. For example, if part of your region is very coastal/maritime and that affects the type of
employment and lifestyle in one part of the region, this may differ greatly for more interior or
mountainous parts of the region.
o Use official statistical data (i.e Statistics Canada or provincial statistics) to summarize the population
composition of the region. You may create a table or graph as well. You may need combine (i.e. add
together) data from more than one province if your region overlaps provincial boundaries.
o Finally, conclude with a paragraph or two reflecting on the usefulness and validity of ‘Region’ as a
concept, with specific examples from your region.
Think about all the other options we have for organizing space – Canada is comprise of 10 provinces
and 3 territories; is it useful to further reduce this to 6 groupings with no official jurisdiction? What
purpose does that serve? What about a country like the US with 50 states? Does region become
more useful when you have more components that you are trying to generalize?
o Do not forget to cite ALL sources using APA style, 7th Edition.
