The “Simple” Explanation of Investigative Cyber Crimes and Internet Vulnerabilities The first four (4) modules of this course have taken students through various methods of investigations involving Cyber Crimes and Internet Vulnerabilities.  It has focused on these methods along with identifying the behavioral characteristics and intent of the actors.  An element of these types of investigations that will repeatedly appear is coming into contact with people who will be familiar with anything you are talking about.  A good example of this is years ago, I met with Administrative Judge in our area.  He is the Judge in charge of all the other Judges.  I offered to set up all the Judges a remote conference ability to electronically sign search warrants at 2am.  I spoke of how this would make it so we didn’t have to wake up their entire house and it would speed up the process.  While I was expecting a “that would be great response”, the response I got was, “If we did that I would be forced to use it, and we are all old and don’t want to learn anything new.”  So a few days later, I was calling him at 2am to sign a warrant. Essay Instructions: The mid term essay is going to involve making this all sound easy.  1. Go to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (Links to an external site.) download  press page and find an article.  For those of you on the job, it cannot be a case you were involved with in any way.  2. Explain and Analyze in the simplest manner possible according to methods described in the first four (4) course modules.  An effective method for this approach involves Defining the offenses involved, explaining certain elements of the methods and applying specific methods of investigation and the reasoning behind them. 3. Essay must be done in appropriate APA format.  This will include proper in text citations and reference list.  Any paper not done in proper APA will not receive a grade of A.  Use this link at Purdue OWL

(Links to an external site.) download   If part of the format is on this page at Purdue Owl and not in your paper, you will be penalized. 4.  Paper will be written in Third Person.  Do not write in First or Second Person.  Any paper not written in Third Person will not receive an A. First Person is the I/WE perspective Second person is the YOU perspective Third Person is the HE/SHE/IT/THEY perspective 5. 12 point font, Times New Roman, Double Spaced,  Please do not put the extra spaces between paragraphs to make up space and think you are reaching the minimum length.  Believe it or not I’ve had that done at the graduate level and it is pretty ridiculous and so obvious. 6.  Paper will be a minimum eight (8) pages in length with a total of thirteen (13) sources.  Essay should have two (2) references  to each of the first four modules for a total of eight (8) and five (5) outside.  This means two references to module one (1), two references to module two (2), two references to module (3) and two references to module (4), giving a total of eight references to the modules.  The five references from outside sources makes it a total of thirteen (13). Cover sheet and reference list do not represent a page.  Do not reference the module information as “In module two we learned….”  This would limit the reference to only those in the class. 7.  If you have any questions contact me before the paper is due and lets brainstorm. 8.  The manner in which you write this or going about making your points is up to you.  Just make sure it includes what is in these instructions.
