Question description
I have a discussion post and annotated bibliography reference paper due tonight. The discussion post is 250-300 words and the bibliography is 6 references in APA format with a summary of main points and thesis. Here are the directions:
1) Discussion Post: The Research Paper is similar to the Argument Essay: you will choose any topic that interests you, complete some research on that topic, and write a paper that takes a stance on the topic. The difference, however, is a slight shift in the form of the essay. While you will still choose a topic, research it at length, take a position, and present your point of view, the research paper should project an impartial, informative tone, and rely heavily on careful, extended research. While the Argument Essay asks you to think about and take a stance on a particular issue, the Research Paper asks you to extend your scope, dig deeper, use more research, and consider highly credible sources, like journal articles and interviews with experts.
Remember that this paper is 1250 words in length about 5 pages. This allows you the space to explore a topic in depth, offer context for the topic youre exploring, and effectively and thoroughly explore several sources.
The first step is to choose a topic, and it is in your best interests to choose one that is both unique and interesting to you. The common research essay topics may seem easy, but they are deceivingly difficult to do well. Theyre generally too broad, theyre hard to approach with an open mind, and theres too much information available to adequately narrow your focus. Therefore, you are not allowed to write about same-sex marriage or abortion for this paper. In addition, you must choose a different topic than the one you discussed in your Argument Essay, unless you get permission from your instructor to do so.
For this discussion forum assignment, you will write a short proposal about your topic. Choose a topic based on what you observe and experience in your own life. What would you like to learn more about? What are you interested in, but dont know much about? Try to select a topic that you dont already have a strong opinion about, as this will help you approach the paper with an unbiased point of view.
In your initial post for this discussion forum,
Describe the ways you observe and experience the issue firsthand
Explain your topic choice via a research question. This question will guide you as you begin your research. Work to answer this question as you research and write the essay. (However, your guiding question can always change as you research and write, if you want to change your focus.)
For this part of the assignment, concentrate on getting your ideas on paper and thinking through what you already know about the topic.
PLEASE NOTE: The final research essay will not be written in the first person (it will adhere to the formal APA guidelines). However, It is okay to write the proposal in the first person, because finding personal connection to the topic can help you write a more specific and interesting research paper.
2) Annotated Bibliography:
Begin researching your topic by looking online, in the Hondros Online Library, in any other libraries that you have access too, and by talking to expert sources of information. As you begin your research, look at any relevant information, but s
tay engaged with your topic by looking for the answers to your research question. Remember that this assignment is designed to help you as you begin to write your paper. The more effort you put into finding good sources and making effective notes, the easier it will be to write your draft. Try to look for resources that help you answer the research question you posed in the Research Paper Proposal Discussion Forum.
As you research, compile a list of high quality sources related to your topic.
High quality sources are reputable and scholarly. At least half of your sources should come from publications, like journals, reports, essays, and books. Though many of these can be found online, these are distinctly different from personal web pages and personal blogs. Reputable online sources and publications should be affiliated with well-known and reputable organizations or well-established institutions (sites that end with .edu or .gov are often considered more credible, but you should examine each source on a case by case basis).
Make sure that your sources are relevant to your argument. Consider how the sources you use will make you more or less credible. Use strong references that are relevant to your discussion to build your credibility as a writer.
Do not search only for sources to support an argument that you want to make. Instead, search for sources that might answer your question in whole or in part, regardless of their point of view. You can always omit sources that you distrust, or better yet, reference them within your paper and then argue against them.
Collect at least six sources that you will likely use as references in your research paper and use them to draft an Annotated Bibliography. Essentially, an annotated bibliography looks like an APA references page, but with a short summary of the argument and main points of each source. In other words, write at least six APA references for sources relevant to your argument, and underneath each one, write (in your own words) that sources thesis, its main points, and how you think the source will be relevant to your paper.
Below, youll find an example annotation taken from the Purdue Online Writing Lab website. Remember that you must complete a reference an annotation for all six sources.
Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and dimed: On (not) getting by in America. New York: Henry Holt and Company.
Ehrenreich attempts to ascertain whether it is currently possible for an individual to live on a minimum-wage in America. Taking jobs as a waitress, a maid in a cleaning service, and a Wal-Mart sales employee, the author summarizes and reflects on her work, her relationships with fellow workers, and her financial struggles in each situation. Ehrenreich is aware of the limitations of her experiment and the ethical implications of her experiential research tactics and reflects on these issues in the text. The author is forthcoming about her methods and supplements her experiences with scholarly research on her places of employment, the economy, and the rising cost of living in America.
This assignment is worth 20 points. Your annotations will be graded out of 12 points (2 points for each annotation); your APA references will be graded out of 8 points.
