SEMESTER 1 2023/24
ENTR6033 / 10-09-23 2/5
Coursework Brief:
The coursework consists of an individually written report of a maximum of 3,000 words.
Your report should present a critical analysis of an entrepreneurial venture business plan of your own.
Your objective is to identify and research an opportunity for an entrepreneurial venture and write a
business plan showcasing how it can be successfully implemented for a group of investors. This new
idea/opportunity cannot be the same as the group coursework (the pitch). The opportunity can be
something that you have already explored for your venture, or it can be a new idea that you come up
with yourself. The opportunity must be one that you have identified yourselves, (i.e. you cannot
prepare a business plan for an existing organization that is not yours).
This means that you should:
1. analyse the key elements of an entrepreneurial venture’s business plan;
2. support your analysis with appropriate entrepreneurship literature appropriately referenced;
3. be critical in your business plan analysis and selection of supportive entrepreneurship literature.
Your report should cover the key elements of a standard business plan (see week seven lecture), including
Executive summary
Your report should include an executive summary that presents clearly and promptly the venture.
Company Description
Your report should demonstrate how you are going to translate an idea into a business. Items to
discuss in this section can be:
o A brief history of the company
o Mission statement
o Founding team
Prodcut or service description
o You need to clearly describe the product or service that you are offering.
o You need to include what is the problem and how this product or service can offer the solution.
Industry analysis
o You need to critically analyse the industry. Here you can draw on the relevant theories such as
Porter’s five forces, or industry life cycle.
Market analysis
You need to critically analyse your target market. You need to explain who your potential customers
are (i.e., market segmentation target market selection), and how your product or service fits into
their needs (i.e., buyer behaviour).
You also need to critically analysis your competitors. In doing so, a) you need to identify your key
competitors and critically analyse your competitors drawing on the relevant theories and
literature, and b) to estimate the firm’s annual sales and market share.
You have the options of offering a comprehensive competitor analysis as part of the industry analysis
or offering a general analysis of the competition as part of the industry analysis and focusing on
critically analysing 2 or 3 key competitors in this section. To discuss the key competitors, you can
draw on theories such as the resource-based view to explain how your firm’s unique resources and
capabilities can help you overcome the competition.
Operations
Your report should include an analysis of one operational area (i.e., marketing, product/service
development or operations). This means you need to choose one and not the three.
SEMESTER 1 2023/24
ENTR6033 / 10-09-23 3/5
Key stakeholders
You need to briefly introduce the key stakeholders, followed by critically analysing two or three of
your key stakeholders. This should include the relationship and importance of those stakeholders to
your firms.
Financial analysis/projection
o This section primarily focuses on explaining how you intend to generate revenue. For example,
it should outline whether you are pursuing a high-margin, low-volume business model or a low_xFFFE_margin, high-volume one.
o Additionally, you should include financial forecasts, encompassing income statements, balance
sheets, cash flow statements, and break-even analysis. This section should extend over multiple
years into the future and illustrate the viability of your business.
Outlook
o Your report should include a summary of your critical analysis.
o Your report should include a conclusion on how promising you see the outlook of the venture based
on your analysis.
Your report should be titled
“A critical analysis of [your venture] business plan”. You should name the
report file with this title, i.e. “A critical analysis of [your venture] business plan.pdf” or “A critical
analysis of [your venture] business plan.doc”.
You are expected to bring together and critically employ the venture information and the module
material (theories and conceptual frameworks) in forwarding your argument, assessing competing
interpretations, rather than just providing descriptions or simply repeating the entrepreneurship
literature.
You are advised to carry out your research and analysis independently. You should not include
venture analysis materials that are shared publicly, such as industry analysis provided through other
sources. In case you draw on some publicly available data, such as IBIS reports, you need to make sure
to provide accurate citations. Submissions that demonstrate cheating and plagiarism will be penalized
according to the university regulations (please read very carefully the relevant page, on Academic
Integrity, of the University of Southampton Business School).
The submission deadline for this assignment is 4 pm on the assignment due date (please see page one
for the date). Any delayed paper will be subject to the standard late submission penalties.
The assignment must be submitted electronically via Turnitin, which is accessed via the individual
module on Blackboard. Further guidance on submitting assignments is available on the Blackboard
