BUSM177 – Innovation and Global Competition
Assessment One: Group-work (20% of total grade for the module)
Terms of Reference (ToR)
Presentation (5%)
You will be placed in a group comprising no more than five students. Each group will be
asked to choose ONE case study; preferably a contemporary innovation selected from the
various examples discussed during our sessions, and as noted on the QMPlus pages for
each week. Each group is required to present a critical analysis of their chosen case study.
In that context, the lens of analysis/analytical framework should keep in mind and reflect,
as we have done throughout our sessions, the School of Business and Management’s core
purpose, which is to ‘promote social justice, sustainability and good governance’.
Each presentation, including time for questions and feedback, will last no longer than 15
minutes. The presentation should be about 10 minutes long, with 5 minutes for questions
and feedback from myself, and some invited colleagues and professionals (TBC).
Logically, then, the more time that is spent on a presentation, the less time there will be
for questions and feedback. The presentations are proposed to take place in Week 10;
that is week commencing 27.03.23.
Ahead of the presentations, all groups are required to submit, by email to me in Week 6,
a short abstract – no more than 250 words – outlining the chosen case study, why it was
chosen, and how it is to be analysed.
All groups are required to submit a presentation pack of 10 to 12 slides to me by 11am
on Monday 27
.03.23. Ideally, each group member should contribute/speak during the
presentation.
Report (10%)
In addition to the presentation, each group will be expected to write a report on their case
study, to be submitted via Turnitin by 3pm (UK time) on 03.04.23. The report should
reflect and augment the presentation.
The report should be 1500 words, with the standard 10% caveat/allowance either way:
which excludes any acknowledgements and the bibliography. Each team member will be
expected to contribute equally – pro rata – to the authorship of the report. Therefore, for
example, in a group of 5 students, each team member should contribute 300 words.
Please note that the key objective of the group presentation is to provide you with a
safe and friendly environment to build and demonstrate your ability to work as a team,
as well as to practice your presentation skills in front of your peers and colleagues.
The marking criteria, therefore, is not just about assessing the “correct” answers, but
rather how well you have prepared, argued, and defended your position as a team.

Peer assessment (5%)
Do also note that the marking criteria will include a peer-assessment grade based on the
following criteria:
1) Willingness to participate in group activities,
2) Quality of contribution to group activities, and
3) Ability to work with other team members.
The average mark (based on mean) awarded by all members of your group, will be used
to determine your final total mark. The peer assessment should be submitted with the
Group Report by 3pm on 03.04.23.
