How to write
an essay
Writing an essay:
? The essay is the most common type of assignment;
? It enables you to explore a topic in detail and demonstrate your
knowledge and understanding in a piece of analytic writing.
? A good essay demonstrates an ability to:
? Understand the question
? Select appropriate reading sources
? Develop a central idea, sustaining the argument from beginning to end
? Use evidence and examples to support your arguments
? Analyse, synthesise and critically evaluate material from different sources

Essay structure
? Essays are usually written in continuous, flowing, paragraphed
text and don’t use section headings. This may seem unstructured
at first, but good essays are carefully structured.
? An essay consists of three basic parts:
? Introduction
? Body
? Conclusion
Introduction
? An introduction to an essay usually has three primary purposes:
? To set the scene
? To tell readers what is important, and why
? To tell the reader what the essay is going to do (signposting)
? A standard introduction includes the following five elements:
? A statement that sets out the topic and engages the reader.
? The background and context of the topic.
? Any important definitions, integrated into your text as appropriate.
? An outline of the key points, topic, issues, evidence, ideas, arguments, models,
theories, or other information, as appropriate.
? A final sentence or two which tells the reader your focal points and aims.
Main body: paragraphs
? The body of the essay should be organised into paragraphs. Each paragraph
should deal with a different aspect of the issue, but they should also link in
some way to previous ones.
? The first sentence, or two, tells the reader what the paragra

cover – the theme. It may either begin a new point or follow a previous one.
? Providing evidence and examples in support of each main topic or theme
? You must ensure that each main point is related to your central idea. This will
give unity and coherence and a convincing argument.
? It is important that the argument flows smoothly and logically towards the
conclusion.
Conclusion
? There is never any new information in a conclusion.
? The conclusion usually does three things:
? Reminds your readers of what the essay was meant to do.
? Provides an answer, where possible, to the title.
? Reminds your reader how you reached that answer.
? The conclusion should usually occupy just one paragraph. It
draws together all the key elements of your essay, so you do not
need to repeat the fine detail unless you are highlighting
something.
How to construct a
well-structured answer?
? Consider how each point relates to the previous one and the next,
as well as to the central topic
? Include relevant evidence and/or examples to support each point
? Use signposting to make the relationship between ideas clear
? Write analytically (i.e. show evidence of critical thinking) – why is
the example appropriate to support your idea?
Writing and flow
? Writing clearly involves using good sentence structure and
using connectives to link your ideas:
? Using connectives properly makes your work easy to
read and understand
? But using them unnecessarily can confuse readers.
? Connectives link sentences, phrases and ideas in your
writing to guide your reader through your work.
Useful words
? Connectives can demonstrate your analysis and criticality, the flow
of your work, the development of your material, or a different angle
or change in direction.
? Connective examples:
? The first claim, [topic] can be explained by…..
? For example…
? However; in contrast; on the other hand…
? Nonetheless; despite this; although…
? In addition; furthermore…
? Therefore; consequently; as a result…
? Similarly…
Using evidence
? Evidence can come from a range of sources. Your evidence
could come from data, results, findings, newspapers,
databases, documentaries, or sound logical thinking and
argument.
? Examples of phrases to introduce evidence:
? The evidence shows…
? Table 1 demonstrates…
? Figure 2 indicates…
? According to the results…
? The argument suggests…
? The author implies that…
Some tips
? You can start now, lecture materials are up, including audio
recordings.
? A good starting point? Lecture materials/ academic resources and
industry materials – your notes are a good starting point
? Look in the media/ magazines for recent examples that you could
use
? Be reflective: what is a different perspective on the topic? What is
a counterargument? Is it a plausible one?
Essay Formatting
? Use Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman
? Typeface size 12 and1.5 line spacing
? Leave a line space between paragraphs
? Avoid having the first line of a paragraph at the bottom of the page
? Word count – you are allowed a 10% tolerance over the 2.000-word
count (that is, up to a maximum of 2.200 words), without penalty
? Include page numbers, use good English and correct grammar, and
proofread the complete report before final submission
