Question 1 Draw the bending moment diagram for all members of the frame in Fig 1. The vertical load of 100 kN is acting at mid-span of BC whereas the lateral load of 100 kN is acting at B. Note that A and D are fixed ends and the second moment of area I of all members are the same. Beam BC is horizontal before deformation. (25 marks) Question 2 (a) Draw the bending moment diagram for the fixed-ended beam with non-uniform cross section as shown in Fig 2a. Note that the point load is applied right at the interface of the two cross sections. (5 marks) (b) Determine the bending stiffness of the member at B and at C. (5 marks) (c) What are the carry-over factors from B to C and vice versa (5 marks) (d) By using the results obtained above, or otherwise, draw the bending moment diagram of the continuous beam in Fig 2b. Note that A and B are rollers while C is a fixed end. There is a downward settlement of 12 mm at B. Take EI = 100,000 kNm 2 . (10 marks) Question 3 (a) In a multi-span continuous beam, the maximum moment for design can be reduced by the principl

e of moment redistribution. Explain, with the aid of diagram, how it is possible. Can moment redistribution occur in a simply-supported beam Why (5 marks) (b) Determine the elastic load-carrying capacity of the two-span continuous beam shown in Fig 3. Given that the design sagging and hogging moment capacities of the beam = 10 kNm. Note A is a fixed end while B and C are rollers. (5 marks) (c) Determine the location of the first plastic hinge and the respective load P. (5 marks) (d) Determine the location of the second plastic hinge and the respective load P. (5 marks) (e) Determine the collapse load and state which span will fail. (5 marks) Semester One Final Examinations, 2018 CIVL3340 Structural Analysis Page 3 of 8 SECTION B Question 4 A truss structure composed of four nodes and three elements is shown in Fig 4. A 5kN load hangs from node 4, however after the load was applied, it was noticed that the support at node 1 had settled downwards by 5mm. Using the DIRECT STIFFNESS METHOD, calculate member forces, support reactions, and nodal displacements. For all members E=250GPa and A=400 mm 2 . (25 marks) Question 5 Shown in Fig 5 is a continuous beam structure. For all members E=200GPa and I=2 x 10 8 mm 4 . Using STRUCTURAL ANTI-SYMMETRY and the DIRECT STIFFNESS METHOD, calculate support reactions and member forces arising from the applied UDL w. Assume L=4m and w=2kN/m.
