Our topic is multiculturalism and Canada. Therefore, I want you to explore this topic through a combination of (a) scholarly writing, (b) interpersonal interviews, and (c) personal experience. Here’s the assignment, presented in steps. You can work alone or in groups up to 3 people.
1) Identify one aspect of multiculturalism in Canada that interests you as it pertains to one ethnic, religious, cultural, or language group. The “aspect” could be legal, social, linguistic, psychological, and so on.
2) You need to use the library and databases to find two or three journal articles or books relevant to your chosen topic. You’ll have to read, understand, and summarize the ideas of those references.
3) Then, now that you know more about what scholars say about this topic, each person in your group needs to interview somebody outside of our class (3 group members, 3 interviews) to find out what they think about the topic. You’ll need

to plan the questions to ask in the interview, and record their answers so that you can refer to them later. Note, in this portion of the assignment, you are comparing what the scholars say to what “ordinary people” say.
4) Consider your own experience in relation to the topic and what you have learned from the scholars’ work and the comments of other people.
Written Assignment. This is an individual writing assignment. In addition to an introduction to the topic, there are three important elements to the paper. You should discuss the content of at least one of the articles, and reference properly. You should explain the interview that you did: who did you interview, why did you choose that person, what did you ask him/her and what did that person say. You should discuss what you learned, how your ideas changed, and how the article and/or interview relates to your own experience. This document should be 4 to 5 pages (1,000-1500). Be sure to include references.
