.In re Gault, 387 U.S. 1. In this case, a fifteen year old boy Gerald Gault was arrested for making calls to his
neighbor. His parents were not informed of his arrest and the arresting officer had filed a petition, neither Gault nor his parents were furnished with this petition. The hearing was conducted on ninth June 1964 in the absence of the accuser and there was no record of the hearing. It was alleged that Gault was questioned by the judge and made several admissions, upon which he was detained and as released a few days before the next hearing that was held on fifteenth June 1964which was also conducted in the absence of the accuser (Mrs.Cooks) and also there was no recording of the hearing. Gult was sentenced for six years to a juvenile detention. Gaults parents sought for writ of habeas corpus, which was denied. Gault therefore sought relief in the Supreme Court which reversed the decision of the lower courts and thereby asserting that the right to due procedure espoused under the fourteenth amendment was an inalienable right (In re Gault, 387 U.S. 1)
