Guidelines to Writing Your Research Paper
RESEARCH PAPER – GROUP PROJECT
Instructions
Based on a review of the ASEE PRISM articles (available in BeachBoard), your group selects a topic
associated with the engineering innovation mentioned in the article. The topic need not be broadly
defined and may be narrowed down to one specific element of the innovation. For example: If you read
the article “Bright and Cloudy” (article “Civil Eng 9”) about the digital cloud tower to be constructed for
the 2012 Olympics, your topic might include: light-emitting diodes, regenerative braking, nanogel
thermal insulation, etc. This article may not be selected.
Your research paper should include at least 3 references from sources (books, journal articles,
encyclopedias, other reference works and authoritative Internet sites). A fourth citation can be from an
internet site.
1) Thoroughly researchall aspects of the engineering topic. Make sure the topic can be expressed
within a practical design, to be assembled using specified parameters and materials.
2) Identify one physical or scientific law associated with the topic (see “Physical Laws” handout).
3) Identify one mathematical formula behind the law (see “Mathematical Formulas” handout).
4) Cite your references using APA style. At least TWO articles must be selected from scholarly
sources, current within the last five years.
REPORT FORMAT, STRUCTURE, EDITTING
Format (use the APA paper template):
Cover page: provided
Number of pages (not including cover page): 5 pages (double-spaced)
APA Style: 1” margins, 5-space indents for each paragraph; use Level and 1 and 2 headings

Structure:
Introduction (1 or more paragraphs): This is where you introduce the topic. Make this a clear limited
statement. This is where you “grab” the reader’s attention and announce the topic.
Body (5 or more paragraphs):These paragraphs should give the details of the paper. Make each
paragraph a solid unit that develops a clearly announced sub-theme, includes supporting sentences
with examples and your opinions. Consider writing a mini-intro that tells the reader what you want
to say, what is in each part, and how the parts relate to each other (these are transition sentences).
Conclusion (1 paragraph): A summary of what you have stated with conclusive remarks about what
you think. Wrap it up with a final statement expressing why you chose the topic and what personal
significance it has.

you minimize repeating yourself or using imprecise word choice. Use spelling/grammar check and
thesaurus to refine your paper.
Presentation:
Each team is required to present the content of their term paper to the class. All members must participate
and be present for the presentation. This presentation should be made in PowerPoint with 10 minutes
time limit. The presentation will be graded according to the guideline below. Use the guideline to help
you develop the slides. All and all, the slides should be well organized, visually appealing and

reate effective slides is keeping the slides clean and concise by
avoiding cluttering the slides with too much text, irrelevant graphics and animation. An electronic copy
of the presentation must be submitted to the “Project Presentation” Dropbox on BeachBoard by 5PM
on October 30th (one file per team). Business casual attire is highly recommended.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Submit your revised paper through the “Project Report” Dropbox via BeachBoard (remember, only
one person in your group needs to submit the paper; the cover page MUST indicate the names of all
group members).
2. You may re-submit your paper as many times as you would like untilthe due date. P*of the week that it is due. Once the due date arrives, you will not be able to resubmit,
as the Turn-It-In site will not accept late papers.
3. If you turn it in multiple times, you will be able to view the “originality” report. Look at the
“originality” report. Look at it section-by-section. If the section is indicated as: “% match (student
papers from . . .) Submitted to CSU, Long Beach, this refers to a portion of your writing as matching
that of another student in ENGR101. Re-write only those areas that reference other sources and/or
internet sites.
NO HARD COPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
