(My literature review is focusing on the issues in different police interrogations) Literature Review Overview and Requirements (This is what the instructions my professor provided) Demonstrate proficiency in writing a literature review related to a current research topic in the field of criminology. Put as simply as possible, a literature review identifies, collects, defines, organizes, compares, and interprets the current (relevant and recent) research literature about a topic. (I know that is a big long list of verbs but consider that they are the foundation of the step-by-step instructions below). Synthesis is paramount. You are not summarizing or reporting on different sources separately, and you are not presenting your own argument. In your literature review, you should put the sources together (synthesize them) to demonstrate the theoretical approaches, historical context, and current data that accurately illustrates the current knowledge related to your topic. Assignment Requirements: Write a 10-12 page literature review on a topic related to the field of criminology and/or criminal justice. Include a minimum of 15-20 sources. Many students will include more than 20 sources for the literature review, however using more than 20 sources does not guarantee a higher grade. Your grade (see rubric and criteria below) will be partially determined by the types of sources you select (academic, governmental, popular), and the relevance and appropriateness of the sources to the topic. Formatting Requirements: The final draft of your literature review should be properly formatted using APA, include a title page, an abstract, the body of the literature review, and a complete references list. (You can use the outline below my professor gave the students to write the full literature review.) Introduction Section 1 statement of topic (identify problem, question, main ideas and issues, etc.) Section 2 background / history of research and topic (what led to the current research) Section 3 current perspectives (identify main ideas, approaches, and
perspectives that shape the current research) Section 4
methods / sample (selection criteria for the types of research included in the review
why are these sources representative of the research as a whole) Part 5
assessment of the main objectives of the literature (the research) and how it relates to the main question / problem. Findings/Results (data and evidence) Section 1
statement of the main trends (be inclusive
dont list out the trends for each source individually
identify the main trends (similarities and overlaps) between all the data. Section 2
tables (if applicable) Section 3
analysis and presentation of specific data (maybe quantitative results and research findings source-by-source, or maybe case studies) Section 4
assessment and acknowledgement of variations and missing data Discussion (perspectives and ideas + data = conclusions) Section 1
a coherent and inclusive discussion about how the main trends from he data (part 1 of data) address the main ideas and problem of the topic (part 1 of intro). Section 2
assessment and evaluation of main conclusions, perspectives, and ideas (parts 2 &3 of intro combined with part 2&3 of data)
long and important part that includes everything. Section 3
identify how part 4 of data (variations and missing data) is important to the overall assessment of the literature
identify possible policy implications (what should be done)
identify possible directions for future research (unanswered questions or unsolved problems)
and then wrap up in some tidy conclusion
sometimes (in some circumstances) this final part is broken out into a separate main section titled Conclusions. I also provided the sources that I collected for this literature review. These sources are what I needed to write about in my literature review.
