Assignment 6: Douglas DC-3
Objectives:
Removing Material & Adding Complexity
Use the shell and the cut operations (extruded, revolved,
swept, and lofted) to remove material from a solid part
Use mirrored features, linear patterns, and circular
patterns to create a solid part
Use fillets, chamfers, and 3D text to add detail to a solid
part
Use geometric and parametric dimensional constraints to
fully define sketches
Use good techniques to make sketches efficient, dynamic,
and fully defined
Douglas DC-3
Douglas DC-3
Use shell, cuts,
patterns, mirrors,
edge treatments, and
text to finish the
model of the DC-3
Use the provided
drawing and images
for reference and
approximate
dimensions
Use geometric and parametric constraints to ensure all
sketches are fully defined
Required:
Airplane
Full airplane (not half airplane)
Engines
Three propeller blades
Engine nacelle (hollow engine)
Rounded engine inlet
Hollow inlet air scoop
swept or lofted cut, extending into
nacelle
Hollow exhaust pipe
swept or lofted cut, extending into
nacelle
make sure not to have any
extraneous leftover pipe segments
Engine-to-wing smooth radius
Fuselage
Fuselage skin
hollow fuselage only (nosecone,
cockpit, passenger compartment, tail
section) – not wings or
vertical/horizontal stabilizers.
Average skin thickness on a DC-3 is
0.050’’
Cockpit windshield
cut all the way through the fuselage
skin
Cabin windows
cut all the way through the fu
selage
skin
Airline name
has to be an actual solid feature,
correctly formed on both sides of the
airplane
Wings
Wing-to-body fairing (variable
radius fillet)
Douglas DC-3 Solid Model Detail
Optional (possible extra credit):
Other ideas
Control surfaces
Passenger entry/exit door
Baggage compartment door
Antennas
Interior details
Landing gear
Assignment
Download the following ZIP archive from Canvas to complete the assignment:
Files (solid model, drawing, images): Section F – Assignment 6 – DC3 Files.zip
Submit the following files on T-Square:
Part: Lastname_Firstname_F_6_DC3_part.sldprt
Drawing: Lastname_Firstname_F_6_DC3_drawing.slddrw
Lastname_Firstname_F_6_DC3_drawing.pdf
Drawing should contain the 3 standard orthographic views (front, side, top) and
1 pictorial view of the completed airplane
Also dimension the outer engine nacelle diameter, overall wing span, and overall length in
the drawing file (refer to the sample image on the next slide)
Notes on submitting the drawing (.slddrw) file
(!) Make sure to save your drawing as a Detached Drawing [“Save As” – > “Save as type:” ->
“Detached Drawing (*.slddrw)”] before you submit it in Canvas.
Failure to do so might result in an unreadable file
NOTE: Only use the “Detached Drawing” option for drawings intended for digital
submission.
Due – see Canvas
